Hey Star Trek fans: There's a new movie in pre-production. So is Shatner the only one who can play Kirk?

I see this movie as hollywood's attempt to allow the franchise to continue after the orginal cast is no longer able to perform. So, do you think someone else could play Captain Kirk or is Bill Shatner the one and only Jame Tiberus Kirk? How about Spock?

jasx051: you need a serious chill pill. Beside George Lucas has already said that Star Wars in over. There will be no more Star Wars film and attempts to take Star Wars to TV has alway flopped. it's too complex of a story for mass market. I like both because it's like apples and oranges but if you like Star Wars then OK.

BruceJ: While I like most of your casting choices the synopsis that has been released do far is Kirk and Spocks first starfleet mission after graduating the academy. most of your choices are too old. the latest rumor is they Shia La Beouf is in talks to play Kirk.

Gypsy Doctor: While I think Matt Daman could pull it off I think he's too old too.

Young Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto

Leonard Nimoy will cameo as old Spock

Chekov is still up in the air.

Rumor has it that Gary Sinise will play McCoy, although I think Stephen Colbert would make a good Bones.

Originally rumored for Kirk was Matt Damon, but no word since the original announcement that the movie was going to be produced.

The way i understand it... this movie is when Kirk first takes over the Enterprise and the days before at the acadamy. I'm not sure who they're going to get to play a young James T. Kirk... but their choice for a young Spock is horrible. Last I heard it was Ben Affleck. Granted... half the time he acts wooden and will do a great job showing no emotion. The other half... well... I shudder at the thought.

The rumor I heard (or was it just someone's wish?) was that Matt Damon would play young James Kirk! I think he'd be great! And they have already said Shatner will cameo as old Kirk just as Nimoy will cameo as old Spock.

Every movie made in the Star Trek franchise hasn't had the original characters. In Star Trek XI there is no plot outline yet and they only have 2 confirmed characters and both of them are Spock to be played by Nimoy and Zachary Quinto. Anton Yelchin is in negotiations to play Checkov.

Just my opinion, I think he's the only one to play Kirk. I guess they could find another look-alike "over actor", but he's the only one that can wear the "Shatner 2000" toupee. I'm sure they could find another Spock too, if need be.

I don't like the way they've been portraying Vulcans lately, especially in Enterprise. They have too much emotion. They shouldn't have any at all. But if there's another Kirk, he should act like Clinton, chasing skirts all over the ship (In the original series the female crew members wore short skirts with black stockings. Kirk would not want that to change).

this is Doc from the podcast Heroes of Science Fiction and Fantasy and I think that Matt Damon was a good idea...the studio thinks he is too old...but I think if they are going to pull a young actor in ....they are taking a chance....it will be hard enough for Damon to pull it off let alone a young actor....hope they think long and hard....I can't wait for this movie...
