It was code in bars back in the 1930's. One guy could say that he felt 'happy and gay'. Another homosexual would know what he meant, a straight guy would just think he was in a 'festive' mood.

Gay originally meant happy.

Many homosexuals have 'happy and gay' body movements, behavior, and speech patterns. Basically all the stereotypes society associates with homosexuals can be summed up in one word: gay.

Not all homosexuals behave that way or fit that stereotype. Despite this, over the years the word 'gay' has become synonymous with homosexual. Currently, even non-"gay" acting homosexuals refer to themselves as gay. It's not a perfect word, but it's easier to say because 'gay' has one syllable and 'homosexual' has five. Both words get the general point across.

Hey, good question, it is in this book I have about sex it saids;

Homosexual comming from Homo meaning in the greek term 'Same'. Homo was used down in the medievel states of Greece as the same, when homosexuality came more frequant it was given the name by the public as well as the high authorities as Homosexual.
