Your best way is to change the oil and oil filter every 3000 miles so if there is any junk in the old oil filter it will not get into your new oil. This should also keep your gas mileage at a high because it will properly lube your engine with no stress than when the oil is dirty.

I change both ever 3-4,000 miles. If you have to change only one or the other for some reason, change the filter, and top off the oil. The oil gets dirty faster than it breaks down, and changing the filter removes some of the contaminants.
But seriously, why mess around with something like this? The cost of the oil changes is insignificant when you figure what a replacement engine can cost. The increased gas mileage alone will offset quite a bit of the cost.
There are all sorts of oil change places, they have sales where they will do oil changes for around $20.00. It's cheaper to change it yourself, but not by much. Surely you can scrape together $20.00 every three months or so.
If you can't think of any ways to do this now, you surely will be able to think of a few as you walk back from where ever your car dies at. Change your oil often, and find something else to scrimp on.

Personally I change both every 3,000 miles. To me it not that expensive if it give me a reliable vehicle for 200,000 + miles. Which is what my 1990 Chevy truck have. I may do as well changing every 5,000 as many people do. What I have found is with a gas engine, I check my oil and other fluids (Wiper, Brake etc) every month. When my oil starts looking a certain dirty I change it. They say the one most single thing a person can do for their car is change the oil. And even at todays price of oil, it still less than $10 doing it myself.

Change both every 4500. It's less expensive, and changing the oil without changing the filter is like putting on a pair of new pants without changing your underwear. Most cars these days can go 5,000 between oil changes, so you will be fine.

Definitely change the filter at every oil change. With that said, look into the long-drain capabilities of synthetics: http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=news/oil_drain_intervals_2_06

I change my oil every 15k as recommended by my car's manufacturer. Seriously... thats what BMW recommends. It also helps that I'm using fully synthetic oil.
