you dont need to do anything if you want a shower or bath because you are on your own so it is hygienic. however, if you want to go swimming when on your period you have to wear a tampon which you have to change every 4-8 hours.
you should never insert a tampon when not on your period because of a further increased risk of getting TSS which can be fatal.
for your first few periods it is better to wear pads until you know how heavy or light, how long or short your period is going to be.
good luck and welcome to womanhood!

Taking a shower during your period is very important to stay fresh and clean down there. You can shower without protection because the blood will just be washed down the drain with the water. If you feel uncomfortable seeing your own blood than you can wear a tampon if that would make you feel better about it. As for swimming, you MUST wear either a menstrual cup or a tampon. You absolutely CAN'T go swimming with a pad because it will only absorb the water and become useless.

For showers you don't have to do anything special (just make sure to wash aaway anyblood that may have gotten on the shower floor).
If you are going swimming you have to wear a tampon.

If you're taking a shower you don't have anything to worry about. If you want to swim you will have to use a tampon.
