I suppose in theory it's a good idea as it would reduce driving and help the environment etc however I think the disadvantages far outweigh the benefits.

It would unfairly penalise people who have no option but to drive everywhere i.e. those with no access to public transport. It would be extremely expensive to set up and monitor and this cost would no doubt be passed on to the motorist. It would also be potentially damaging to the economy as business travel costs would increase substantially.

Advantages

Some control over premiums.
Monthly payments.
Possible benefits to 'global warming' as drivers avoid unnecessary travel.

Disadvantages

Initial cost of black box
Difficulty switching if cover is unsuitable
An 'Emergency' might result in a very large fee - e.g. you live in London, Your parents in Edinburgh and you have to make an emergency dash to see one of them in hospital - paying £300 for the trip is a bit steep.
Change in lifestyle could result in large premium increases.
Risk of malfunctioning in box e.g. states you are on a high-risk road when you are not - there is no way you can proove the premium is correct!!
Penalises good drivers who travel a lot! I may be a cynic but a lot of accidents happen very close to home/ school/ place of work and are caused by inexperienced drivers i.e. those who have not done much travelling and who don't.

It would be costly for me as I drive quite a lot.

Luckily, I have discovered reasonable car insurers like Direct Line and Esure who are much cheaper and give a better service than places like Norwich Union.

They also don't annoyingly advertise on sites which are about sharing and asking information.

To make this work, the AVERAGE driver would have to end up paying LESS than a normal 'full year' policy ..

Last I heard the only Company to promote the idea (Norwich Union) would end up charging the 'average' drive about DOUBLE what it would cost elesewhere for a 'normal' policy ..

So I guess (currently) it only appeals to morons who can't do math ..

Doug - could you do us all a favour and go away?
Your insurance company are the biggest rip-off merchants in the country.
If anyone wants to know how to get reasonable car insurance I'd advise them to ring ANYONE but Norwich Union.
Direct Line will beat their quote and service every time.

Agree with Markymark (above)!!
