It is a bit of both. We end up in certain situations through destiny and then make our own decisions to get to the next step.
The former thought process of your question is like a straight line that never varies. The problem with that thinking is that it is circular. No matter what I do I was fated to do it. If I change my mind I was fated to do that. Therefore all things that I do are fated to happen. If that is the case then fate is irrelevant since no matter what you do it is the thing that you would do; a circular argument.
The latter statement is better in that fate becomes like a tree with infinite branches. You make a decision and that puts you onto a certain path. That path has several branches and depending on which one you choose you are then led onto another path, etc.
Of course, the argument could be made that you were fated to take that path but once again that is a circular argument.

i believe in a little of both. although its hard to believe in destiny from where i stand. but some things just seem like they were meant to happen. i often wondered what life would be like for me if i grew up in new york or LA. would i be the same person i am now, probably not. its the people you meet and the situations you are put in that make how a person is. so i believe it is more of a controlled chance. if that makes any sense. its fun to think of the "what ifs". i usually just answer questions on gaming sites but yours got me thinking. thanks. have a good one

I don't believe in fate. But I do believe that 50% of things in life is up to us to achive it or not, and the other 50% is something that we do not have full control over, such as matters that have to be mutual for example, a relationship with a person.

Since I do believe in God, from my perspective it's both, but with the bulk in our realm of choice.
My belief is that, God chooses to keep certain things in his control and to a certain degree, but much is left to us in terms of the life we choose to lead. For instance, God is not going to interfere if someone chooses to focus on succeeding in a particular field (acting, business etc.) and the individual reaps rewards according to his application.
So what does God choose to control? Perhaps, things like birth and death. However, as far as death goes, I reckon we've got some control up to a point.
