i know about po boxes. had one back in the 80's...i dont take the newspaper...i know about the white groupings of mail boxes had one of those back in the 80's too. very unsafe for the mail. i KNOW its a federal crime to tamper with the mail. mostly i am asking about your opion about going paperless (no bills in the mailbox all online, no junk mail). and about your feelings about the usps. thanks....:)

Short of smoke signals what can some of us do? I'm not
good at this hi-tech stuff and I don't trust my personal
information being out there on the wires someplace. We just
got a new mail carrier and she is as dumb as mud! I had to
change to a P.O. box because I didn't get three of my credit
card statements. I had to change all the account numbers. In
fact the only mail she every put in my mailbox belonged to
someone else. Black numbers 2in. tall on a white back
ground and she can't even match the numbers on the envelop.
Seems like when the post office hires someone that dumb,
first year P.O. box rentals should be free. Its not of course
and apart from that its a nine mile round trip to the mail box.
I have considered hanging a sign on my 'RFD' mailbox which
says ( Mailbox for sale - it don't work - Mail carrier will not
leave my mail in it ) I may have to take it down but at least the
bimbo would learn who lives here even if she is too dumb to
read the names on the mail box. Well, smoke signals won't
work because I don't live on a hill. Guess that doesn't really
answer your question. But could we really do without the
paper? What about when the power gos off? Call me old
fashion and call me ticked off. One more thing, how would I
file away a smoke signal? Cheers.

If in a house, I would rather have the mail delivered through the mail slot in my front door. I currently live in an apartment building where the postman has a key to the garage where the mailboxes are, on the other side of the wall next to the laundry room. Packages are usually signed for and kept at the rental office until I pick them up.

If you are receiving checks, the best advice is don't go with the mailbox. Federal law or no, checks are bearer instruments. They can be signed by anybody who takes them for cash. So, a mailbox in a high crime neighborhood is really not the best idea, as you are figuring out.

When I lived on Whidbey, I rented a box at the post office for a couple of dollars a year (maybe $15). I also lived right across the street from the P.O., so that was convenient! And then packages and other mail that was too big for the box, I would just call into work and tell them I was going to be an hour late, and check into the post office and get my package.

I recommend the post office over a street mailbox. If you commute some distance, open a post office box close to where you work so you can check your mail coming in or going home. It is just good security.

Also, see if you can get an option to receive your paystatement online, and then just print it out on your computer's printer and keep a hard copy of it for your records.

It is a federal crime in the USA to take someone elses mail from a mailbox without permission.
Mail boxes keep mail from being stolen, lost by being blown away from the wind and keeps mail dry from the rain.

I have lived in neighborhoods where there is a group mailbox. This all started because of kids who were destroying individual mailboxes. You could get a mailbox at the post office.

You could either get your paper at the news stand or read it off of your computer. I cut mine off three years ago. I get my TV listings, obits, etc. on my computer. I get most of the news on the evening news. I haven't missed the paper for one minute. They have cut so much out of the paper in my town that there's not a lot left. They've even made it smaller. You do what you have to do.
