My answers are in four groups with an overall winner at the end ...

First the more obvious ones
'Alien' for darkness, claustrophobia and the blurring of animate and inanimate structures.
'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (the original) for edginess, editing and direction.
'Blair Witch Project' for unnerving disorientation and growing feeling of unease from a mundane beginning.
'Wolf Creek' for a kind of hybrid of the previous two entries.

The second group all use a similar theme; as a youngster my nightmares were about nuclear war rather than terrorism: 'The War Game', 'Fail-Safe', 'When The Wind Blows' and 'Threads' all tickle those nerves. The cold war is apparently over and somehow we seem to forget about all those big weapons still out there when smaller events hit closer to home.

The next group is less obvious ... to me ... there's simply something that gets under my skin every time I see them.

The Skull - I've only seen it on black and white TV but it scared me when I was 13 just as much as it did when I was 11 but that's a l-o-n-g time ago. It may well look ridiculous now.

Night Of The Demon ... this flickers between being a 'B' movie and a something creepier ... the seance scene spooks me to this day ...

Candyman - others have mentioned this one ... there is something really quite unnerving about it.

Event Horizon - science fiction genre ... saw it when it first came out on DVD when I was jetlagged, it remains the most recent film that really gave me a feeling of fear. I still don't understand why I find it scary... some mixture of the near subliminal flash cuts and Sam Neill's character.

Final group I'd recommend because I trust my kids' judgement and they say these are truly scary

Ring (aka Ringu)
Ju-On: The Grudge
The Grudge (either version)

Overall - for providing me with more uneasy dreams than any other ... the oldest film in my list ... Dead of Night ... ventriloquists' dummies have never been uncreepy since ...

The scariest movie of all time has to be the ENTITY. The reason that it is very scary, is because it is based on true events. There was no help for the women who was being raped by a force that could not be seen and the fact that that might happen to yourself is terrifying.

For me the scariest movie I ever saw was "Flatliners".

Granted, it was not your run of the mill horror flick. Personally I find those more humorous than scary.

Flatliners' story line is about a group of medical students who take turns stopping their hearts and then being resuscitated. The scary part comes because in the immediate afterlife they have to answer to those that they had harmed in their life.

For me, I left the movie thinking about anyone I had ever wronged, and what it would take to make it right. That thought haunted me for weeks.

Alien and The Wicker Man, both ranking very highly in my list of favourite films.

Alien because Ridley Scott relies on what you don't see to scare you and it is so viscerally terrifying. It scares you on so many levels you just realise it at the time. It might not stand up with today's splatter-fest film audiences, but it gave me a few sleepless nights when I was younger. The Alien itself is a classic piece of design. Aliens is also very good, but the last two and Aliens v Predator are very poor in comparison.

The Wicker Man (not the 2006 version) IS the greatest British horror film of all time. Poor, innocent Sergeant Howie being led through the tangled web of pagan belief to his horrific death... I watched it when I was 17 and the ending stayed with me for - well, it's still with me! Fantastic film.

"Animals are fine, but their acceptability is limited. A small child is even better, but not nearly as effective as the right kind of adult".

The original Nightmare on Elm Street, Predator, Friday the 13th & the Evil Dead.
Hostel was pretty lame but Hostel 2 is quite good
Dusk till Dawn isn't so much scary but still a cracking horror

I am a horror movie addict... I love anything that's real or made up... I thought Hostel Part 1 was terrifying, I couldn't sleep afte watching it! And as there is no monsters, well not real ones anyways, and this could acutally happen in some parts of the world, I though it was very scary, imagin being in that positions, horrible!!!
The Decent is also another scary, I know it's not real but imagine being stuck 2miles down in caves with them things after you....
