Needlecraft.

Needle crafting is a general term used to describe different types of needle and sewing activities including crochet, knitting, cross stitch, quilting, and needlepoint.

In my house we call anything done with fiber "sewing". I think the kids started this when they were young and didn't know the difference. I would imagine that the ancients had a specific name for each form of work. And it was probably a talent they were proud of and girls got noticed for, unlike now it's just hobby

We call it "needlework." I don't know about the ancients, but in the 18th and 18th centuries, they called it "work," as in, "She took out her work." Women always had some needlework to do.
