Because for the fifteen minutes they're famous, the record companies make loads of money. Then they drop them and the only loser is the 'artist' themselves.
It costs far more to market a new act than to pump out a single and an album of covers.
The process of the show itself is a money spinner due to advertising and phone-ins.

I kind of agree I do think the auditions are the best but why try out if your not going to get anywhere.Besides Steve Brookstein the 1st winner may have faded to obscurity but Shane Ward is still around,and Leona has recorded an album which coming out soon.

can't remember who won the other lol!
Careers haven't collapsed... just going slowly.

yes they probably make enough money from one hit to make it worthwhile, but the T.V show itself brings in large audience numbers and lets face it is extremly cheap to make as the millions auditioning dont get paid. Also the show has got less to do with the person with the x-factor and more to do with the judges egos

Its all a load of crap. A sign of the times that everything we inwardly digest via television or radio is manufactured and only there to make a bunch or rich fat cats, richer and fatter.
Commercialism is taking over our lives whether you like it or not...
Still, the people who reckon they have got what it takes and couldn't hold a tune if it came in the form of a cough sweet, do make me laugh!

Shane ward is doing quite well for himself, and Leona Lewis is in America promoting her new album there before coming back to England as for Steve Brookstein, i ain't got a clue where he is.

It's all just about viewing figures. The auditions are the bset bit, it's car crash TV. The rest is rubbish and the performers all perform crap music.

so simon and the other judges get a sickining amount of money and ITV get to make money on all the x-factor branding and us lot watching it.
