When Page and Plant failed to ask John Paul Jones for their tour several years ago, zepplin sank. How could they tour without JPJ? By the way, it was The Who's Keith Moon who said the band should go over like a Led Zepplin when told that Page and Jones hired two country bumpkins Plant and Bonham.

As A 30 year Zep fan I am pumped about it too..
As for the name....
Back in the late 1960's Jimmy Page was a Studio Guitarist and teen a member of The band The Yardbirds He was the sucessor to Eric Clapton and then Jeff Beck in that group. Jeff Beck was then in the process of forming his own Band (which included Rod Stewart on Vocals and Ron Wood on Bass btw) and Jimmy was still in The Yardbird which were slowly disintegrating at that time. Jeff Beck had an idea he wanted to do a Rock version of the classical music piece Bolero so Beck Jimmy Page Ron Wood and The Who's Drummer Keith Moon went to a studio and cut the track (Which ended up on The Jeff Beck Group-Truth album btw) anyway Keith Moon wasn't very keen on the track so while they were in the studio and he was talkin to Jimmy he said "This will go over like a LEAD ZEPPELIN" Later on when Jimmy Page was putting together his band The New Yardbirds he thought about the conversation he had had with Keith Moon and thought that would be the Perfect Name for the band. Just remove the A from Lead. Bingo a Rock Legend was born. Hope this helps bud. And by the way being just a little to young (15 in 1980) to have seen Zep in concert I am UBER-Excited over the prospect of a Re-union tour!!!!!

Surprised you never new this story. I thought it was fairly well known.
Back in the 60s, Jimmy Page was playing guitar for the group The Yardbirds, but the band was breaking up. They were signed to do a tour, but the lead singer quit, and the band dissolved. Undaunted, Jimmy decided to put a new band together, and call themselves The New Yardbirds. This band would feature John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant. One fateful night, while at a party with Who drummer Keith Moon, Keith joked that Jimmy's new band would sink like a lead zeppelin.
The name stuck, with a slight misspelling, of course.

Led Zepp had decided to call themselves "The Zeppelins";being a brit band;one evening(late)Keith Moon ;the drummer of the band THE WHO; was nearby while the band played a sortie of gig for friends at a party after hearing the band play ;said tongue in cheek"They dont have a chance...they will go down like A LEAD ZEPPELIN";so the band amused with his repartee dedided to change the spelling and labelled temsleves Led Zeppelin.

Keith Moon said to them ~ when they were about to tour as The New Yardbirds ~
"You'll go down like a lead zeppelin"
{meaning 'lead balloon'}
At the end of the tour they remembered that, changed the spelling to 'Led' {so as not to confuse Americans, they said!}, and started a new life as
Led Zeppelin

Now, those had 2 completely different followings. Zep grew to become into very universal with the pot heads of the time and recognised early Beatles bubblegum. yet, no you will deny the Beatles their place in track history which some distance exceeds Led Zepplin. thinking their comprehensive catalog, i could could desire to go with Beatles additionally.
