Food pellets available in local fish shop will be most economical and nutricient. It is also parasite free.
It will be taken by most fishes but for Predatory carnivour fishes you will need to train them.
It takes time to train them and it may or may not be successful.
If your fish is one of them, I suggest you buy pork heart or beef heart, sliced them into pieces and feed them. For fats, parasites, and nutricient, the hearts contained considerably lower than other meats or live feeders.

I think that the best food for fish is worms. I used to have many pet fish, I gave them fish-food that we can buy from the fish store but they all died. So I started to feed them with worms. They are healthy and fat now.
You can buy the worms in the places where they sell tortoises and fish.

Different type of fish would require a different diet, cold water fishes like goldfish would be differ from that of the Discus....
Generally, I prefer to feed mine with live food. But if i have to feed them with commercial fish food, i would tend to choose those with a mid-priced range and with popular brands. Prices of fish food reflects pretty much what and how they area processed.

I feed mine a mixture. Most days it's flake, but I mix it up every few days with bloodworms, brine shrimp, and krill. Plus they have live plants in the tank and I always keep a spot on my tank for some algae to grow which they nibble at.
Flake is least expensive to buy. Brine shrimp isn't too bad if you want to set it up to hatch your own.

Depends on the fish.........kippers, bloaters or smoked haddock do not need any food. Apart from that you can buy FLAKES to suit either freshwater or tropical fish in any pet shop quite cheaply.

What kind of fish? Pond or aquarium? I have goldfish, koi and shubunkins along with 2 perch.
In a garden pond. I use Tetra food sticks
Walmart for this is cheaper.
and Drs Foster and Smith for the rest.
For special treats I slice oranges and rubyred
grapefruit. All of the fish like that. Frozen peas and dark leaves of romaine....NONE of my fish like flakes.
