I don't know? What did he say to the 'drink crazed scum' of the fifties?

There was plenty of alcoholism and gang warfare then, it just wasn't so well reported and was more localised. If you look at the history of the industrial cities, for example Glasgow, there's plenty of evidence of this. It's possible that the increased mobility means that this is found in more middle class areas and that more areas are now middle class.

Or do you just believe what you read in the Daily Mail?

During the fifties there were gangs of teddy boys who fought each other - but they were respectful to older people. Drinking took place only in pubs until 10.30 (- 10.00 on a Sunday) - and no girl with any self respect got drunk - or mooned!! I genuinely think young people today have too much of everything (including freedom) without knowing the value of anything. (That's a mild version of what Harold McMillan would have said).

Well, he would be saying, "I should have done something about the moral decline of my own generation".

Let's face facts here, the current generation didn't just come up with the idea of anti-social behaviour, it has been around in various forms for several generations. Think of mods and rockers fighting on Brighton beach for one. Drugs took off in the 1960's and the 1970's. Think of the Isle of Wight festival and all the hells angels kicking off. I blame the previous generations for the start of the snowball effect!

Probably the same as he said to the drink crazed scum of the teddy boys in his day - who have now grown up to be the reactionary scum of today who judge others without remembering their own past.
