Exactly what jurisdiction did the feds have to prosecute this case. I don't think there is any federal law against dogfighting?

The state of Virginia, where the dogfighting occurred, does have a law against dogfighting and they do have jurisdiction to prosecute Vick. He is clearly guilty and his actions were clearly disgusting.

Does anybody know why the Feds interfered in this case instead of letting the state of Virginia handle it?

The state is preparing it's case too.
One of the issues, that brought in the feds, was the money trail, and how the network was set-up.

there is a federal law against dogfighting that is why they were called federal charges. And Virginia can prosecute him if they choose. And it won't be double jeapordy. And the state can put him away for 40 years if they want.

Vick should pray to GOD that the state doesn't prosecute.

That is what some of you lamers don't understand - Vick had bought off the locals ( rumor has it that some them even attended the dog fights). He had a little Mafia -type thing going on over there in Surry Co. The locals lack of prosecuting him despite overwhelming evidence is what brought the Feds sniffing around in the first place. Now that the FEDS are about to prosecute the locals for coruption, they are talking about pressing charges on their own. Very bad situation indeed. That is the same reason Vick pleaded out because he could be charged under the RICO statute and given 20+ years. The D.A. and the chief of police of Surry Co. will probably end up in jail for protecting Vick's little criminal operation. Don't you ever investigate these things, or do you just react?

There isn't a law on dogfight but there are law for killing the dogs in the ways that they did. Yo I think that they are making more out of this then it needs to be because look at the celebrities that are doing what they are doing and nothing.

Keeping it real i think that the other so called friends are never going to be in any hood or subburb ever again. snitching is never promitted at all in that situation because they were probably doing all the killings.

I want to see if they are going to do what they did to vick for one of the Government officals that write laws that they break.

Wow how can I say this?
Hmmmmmmmmmm right
WRONG
Mr. Vick traveled across state lines to fight the dogs. Read the report. It is known that he traveled in both New Jersey and Maryland to fight his dogs. This makes it a federal offense. Hence federal jurisdiction. Not to mention the fact that he gained income from these fights. Once again a federal offense. He gambeled on an illegal fight across state lines. Once again a federal charge. Now do you think that the Feds have jurisdiction over the case?

Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. As of 2007, dog fighting is a felony in all states except Idaho and Wyoming, where it is a misdemeanor. In most states, the possession of dogs for the purpose of fighting is also a felony offense. Being a spectator at a dogfight is currently a felony in 20 states, a misdemeanor in 28 and legal only in Georgia and Hawaii. Here is a link that is a .pdf of the actual court documents and the charges against vick. http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2007/images/07/18/ind.pdf

To start with Sloan R ( 2nd comment ) is a looser just like Vick, he must condone dogfighting.
I hope Virginia gets to have seperate charges for Vick. I believe the feds got involved over the moving the pitbulls from state to state. I forgot the term they used for it.

What he did is a federal offense because of the illegal gambling and racketeering across state lines (a federal RICO law violation). Virginia still can also file charges in addition to the federal charges.

One very simple fact in the case: it crossed state lines. That makes it a federal case.

Because the dog fights crossed state borders. And when a crime crosses state boarders depending on what the crime is it becomes a Federal case and investigation.
