I certainly wouldn't say that it's one of the worst books ever written but considering that it is a world wide classic and that over 60 million copies have been sold (according to wikipedia.org) I would have expected it to be much better. And the funny thing is that everybody I mention it to says "Catcher in the Rye? Good book." I strongly disagree.

I am a Professor of Literature and have been for 25 years.

Catcher in the Rye is crap. Plain and simple.

Along with everything Virginia Woolf ever wrote, it is the biggest con that I know of in the world of 'classic' literature.

Read Joseph Heller instead...a million times more intelligent and relevant.

I have just finished the book. I must say that I was really disappointed. It may be interesting from some historical standpoint and maybe it shows some insight into the life of a lost and spoiled teenager, but I found it tedious and painful to to read. I kept waiting for something profound or remotely interesting to happen, but it did not. So now I know. If you want an interesting and profound story that will keep you wanting more, like a sequel, don't waste your time with this one.

Personally, I loved The Catcher in the Rye and could not stop thinking about it after I finished reading it. I loved the symbolism and the character development. It actually brought me to tears.

But, everyone likes different things, so I don't think it is bad at all that you are expressing your opinion. And I applaud you for telling others your real opinion, instead of just saying it was good.

Just finished the book. Was glad to see it end. It sucked big time.Bored, spoiled rich kid without a brain in his head. Who can relate? Not me.

I really would go so far as to say it was the worst book ever written. Its supposed to be this "coming of age" novel, but its just some spoiled brat cussing his life for a couple hundred pages. At least Tess from Tess of the D'urbervilles had a reason to be upset and grew out of it by the end of the book. HOLDEN GET OVER YOURSELF. If I want to listen to people whine I can watch "Dr Phil".

I think when people tell you how much it will change your life and then it doesn't - you tend to feel the pull of the vacuum.
I don't like the book either - but it has it's place.

I hated the book when I read it in school. Holden needs to stop whining.

I also think that the symbolism is all bull.

I had to read this book as part of my course at University. I hated it! I couldn't engage with it on any level, so I really can't understand why its such a classic.

I loved that book! I just finished reading it about a week ago. I wish the ending was longer though.
