You learn about his family. His sister Ariana was assaulted by three muggle boys at around six years of age after seeing her using magic. This lead to her being unable to have any control over her magic. It also lead to his father attacking the three boys and getting sent to Azkaban as a muggle hater and to his mother moving the family to Godric's Hollow where know one will know the truth about Ariana's being a witch (folks will think she's a squib since she's hidden away from the neighbors). They did what they did because if St. Mungos found out about Ariana they would have taken her from the family, never to be seen again.

Dumbledore's father died in Azkaban. His mother died just after he graduated from Hogwarts so he was forced to take care of Ariana. But he was power hungry and became friends with Grindelwald, the very dark wizard he would defeat in 1945. Together he and Grindelwald were going to look for the Deathly Hallows, Grindelwald merely for the power they'd bring, Dumbledore to bring his parents back to life.

But Dumbledore had been neglecting his duties towards Ariana and Aberforth called him and Grindelwald both on it. A fight broke out in which Ariana got killed and Dumbledore for the rest of his life feared he may have been his sister's killer. At her funeral Aberforth broke his brother's nose and the two were astranged for a long time.

You learn because he'd been so power hungry when he was young that he refused to ever take the Minister of Magic position because he was afraid of what it would do to him. Also, even as an old man he still searched for the Hallows, and at one time or another had all three under his possession. He defeated Grindelwald and gained the most well known of the Hallows, the Elder wand, which he used for the rest of his life. He realized James' (later his son's) invisibility cloak was not a normal invisibility cloak but actually one of the Hallows. So he had borrowed it from him in order to examine it, which is why James didn't have it with him the night Voldemort tried killing Harry. And when he found Marvolo's ring he realized the stone was the third Hallow as it was the resurrection stone. It was because of the stone and the fact that he put the ring on that his hand became so badly damaged.

We learn that unlike Voldemort he sought to conquer death through the use of the Deathly Hallows.

Finally, we learned what he would have really seen in the Mirror of Erised. It's not socks like he tells Harry, but having his parents and sister alive and his family whole and happy again.

That he was a weak person when it came to power. His death from Snape was prearranged because he was going to die anyways...The curse that hurt his hand in book 6 turned out to be fatal...and the reason he got the curse was because the stone he got held the power to bring back his dead sister and Dumbledore could not resit that power the way Harry could.
