I think Torre made the right decision to pull Rivera after the ninth. He gave up two hits, which might have been flukes, but it certainly suggests that he wasn't terrifically dominating. Even if he had great stuff, the standard strategy is to use your closer for just one inning so he'll be available the next day. Especially since he was going into a tie game, I don't see any reason to go against the book in this situation.
What stunned me was that Torre didn't use Chamberlain (and don't they have another new stud reliever?) Unless there was some reason he wasn't available, I think Torre was a fool not to put him in for 1 or 2 innings. The guy's about 23, I don't think he'll wear out this year.
I don't understand Francona's pen strategy either. He's got the best set-up and closer combo in the league but seems afraid to use it, like it's a higher priority to give innings to Snyder, Timlin, and the Gag than to win games.

It's a 162+ game season and Torre has to pace Rivera. If he were to use him for more than an inning, as the Red Sox did with Papelbon last year, and if he developed an injury as a result, the Yankees would be seriously harmed. The Yankees bullpen is suspect at best Farnsworth, Chamberlain, Henn lacks something, Scott Proctor maybe.

I'm assuming, being Mariano had 2 blown saves and a loss last week, Torre did not want to overwork him. Although, it looks to me like Rivera is as good as he's ever been, just with less save opportunities... I don't see anything in Torre's decision either. Take Mo out but put in someone even halfway reliable.
Honestly, I never thought Sean Henn was good enough for the Majors. You do not put in Sean Henn after Posada just saved your game. The Yankees are actually quite confident with their bullpen now, Eduard Ramirez, Jobba, Farnsworth (doin' better), Vizcaino and the greatest closer in the game's history, and Torre goes and does something like that, a wasted game and now we're 1 1/2 back in wild card and 5 back in the East.

The Yanks are hot right now so leaving Rivera in for a 2nd inning is a bad move. He'll be 38 this fall and there is over a month left in the season. No need to hit the panic button yet.

They weren't making the playoffs anyways. But Mariano Rivera would have lost the game anyways as well!

Its time for Joe Torre to hang them up. His decisions this year have cost the Yanks several games and will continue to do so the rest of the season. I would love to see Joe Girardi take over next year.
Write your congressman!!!!!

Old Mariano is just that... old. He doesn't have his great stuff anymore, and he's so overworked at the moment that he's just getting shelled left and right. I'd say that he's only got about 1-2 more years left in him as a closer and that's just because of his reputation... not because he'll be any good.

He should have brought in Henn for the ninth and saved Mo for a save opportunity if it arose. I could have gotten a little more sleep last night.
