It is my first time scaring people. I am not doing a haunted house. I am the only person that is going scare people.

dress up like a scarecrow and sit in a lawnchair. have the area set up like a display, have a bowl of cany in your lap, and a sign that says help yourself or something, and when the kids take the candy yell, grab their hand or something to give em a fright. If you can wear a mask and make it look as real as possible the better. I don't know how many times we got scared by that one when me and my sis were little. or you can make a table with a hole in the center and a bowl of candy with a hole in it, and stick your hand through that. fun times.

Hi Star. I'm not sure if this will help but it was fantastic when I pulled it off.
Last year I had some friends over for a Halloween fancy dress party.
The theme was "NIGHTMARE".
My two teenage boys came up with some great ways of decorating the house. For example, they blacked out the windows with black refuse bags. Took the doors off there hinges and put black streamers up. They hired a fog machine which proved a great hit and even replaced the light bulbs with orange and red ones. There were lots of other little things
as well.
But Star the best is yet to come. Just before mid-night I asked every one to be seated as I had something to tell them and this was as good a time as any.
So, I told them a story about how my house was haunted.
About the strange things that happened every day and how things appeared and disappeared.
Of course most of them laughed at the idea, which is what I expected.
Unknown to the party goers my sons and a few of there friends had returned dressed in very scary attire.
About two -thirds of the way through my story the switched off the electricity. There was total darkness ( remember windows blacked out).
I can't begin to tell you the shear panic that resulted. Everyone was terrified. Then when the boys came in with their scary look and the weird sounds coming from the Internet scary sound site, it was the icing on the cake.
People were screaming running blind into each other, what a laugh. Then after what seemed like hours, ( only seven minuets), the electricity was turned back on.
I was prepared for complaints etc. but when they found that they had been set up, they just fell around the place laughing.
Rick, one of my sons had set up an infra- red digi camera and recorded everything. This was played back, which only resulted in hilarious laughter.
It was well after 4am. when people left.
The following day the phone never stopped ringing, with everyone thanking me and the boys for a great night .
I'm sure you will get lots of fantastic tips and I'm sure you will have a great night. Enjoy the party, and go mad.
C.

Dress up like a vampire, complete with cape, then stand out in the yard holding your cape. Stand just like a statue.

Sounds like I'm being a jerk, right? In this case wrong as this is something I've actually done. As folks get close you actually move in a way those store bought Halloween moving/dancing figures never can. Basically it's just normal movement, but it can be enough to really scare people.

One of my favorite Halloween scares was having a couple boys coming up the hill and hearing one of them talk about how he was gonna hit this stupid vampire statue. So I let him get to within a a few feet of me then I turned and growled. The kid literally tripped over himself trying to get away, then he told me how cool it actually was to be scared like that.

Another thing I've done more recently is to have a skull mask, hooded cloak, skeleton glooves, and a fog machine. I just sit at the candy cauldron, hiding the fog machine trigger in the cloak (but where I can see the light if it's ready to produce fog) and hunching over a little while being as still as possible. Then as they get within a few feet I hit the trigger and move. The puffing sound combined with the sudden movement has been known to make folks jump, typically teen girls and some of the younger kids (both boys and girls). Teen boys tend to act a little cooler and not let it show if this does scare them. Though it can be really fun when the teen boys do let it show.

The one thing I would say is do not scare the really little kids. I absolutely hate seeing kids like four and under so terrified to even say trick or treat cause their nearly in tears. The older kids expect it, but these little ones are gonna be scared enough as it is. If their terribly scared, show them you're a person and not a monster. I'll take off costume pieces to let them see it's a person behind the costume.
