I would guess it is the great Pete Townsend, but I am not sure.

you are correct it was pete. he grew up a big american blue grass fan and he learned banjo at a young age from his father who shared interest in bluegrass. pete's dad was also a semi successful jazz musician in england in the 40's and 50's. pete also played the acordian on that song. but not very well, since he only first played it the first time that day.
