Hi,

I'm in northern Oregon.

It may be dying, but I wouldn't count it out yet. We have had very unusual weather this year and it may just not be dealing with it well.

I would look for other indications that it is having problem, such as leaf damage due to insects, fungus growing out of parts of the trunk, branches that are clearly dead, etc.

Has anything happened that would cause the tree some sort of stress, such as the application of pesticides nearby? Has anything been excavated nearby? Try to make these sorts of observations and compare how it does next year.

If you decide to try to save it, recording observations about the tree could help an arborist diagnose and treat what ails it. If you do notice some serious problems such as multiple bore holes around the trunk, you may want to call the arborist sooner rather than later.

Well, it sure could be. Outside thought is the leaves were damaged in some way, say a freak late season frost that caused the abscission layer (the corky cells that cause the leaves to fall) to develop early.

As said above, contact a certified arborist who will examine the tree to see how well the tree has been growing these last few years. He'll also do a through inspection looking for likely death causes.
