"watsonc64" gave you the best option, the Deuce is $2 one way or $5 for a 24hr pass

It's 5.9 miles from Mandalay Bay which is on the South end of the strip to Fremont Street.

It's 1.9 miles from the Stratosphere to Fremont Street.

This is the official site for the Deuce/CAT bus for more info if you need it.

The Monorail does not run to downtown. I added the site because at times it can be a good option for strip travel.

If you don't have any specific time constraints - take the Deuce. It's $2 each way, but it stops EVERYWHERE.

If getting there by a certain time is a factor, cab it. From Mandalay Bay to Downtown is a total of like 6 miles or so, but it goes thru some iffy areas, so I don't recommend walking it. A cab would be $20 or so, max - factoring in going from the far south end of the strip, in heavy traffic.

Def. Taxi.

I don't remember how much it cost exactly - we went from TI to Fremont - but it was well well worth it for the time and safety factor. Besides, we had a good time with both our cabbies!

We just caught a cab at the closest casino where we happened to be when we decided to go to Fremont.

The monorail was a joke. By the time you wander on through the casinos to get to the sations, you might as well have walked. It was not that cheap to compensate for all those extra steps.

Take one of the "Deuce" buses. There's a route that runs between the strip and Freemont St. The fare is only $2.
