I have two Morgan dollars and I believe the one from 1886 was minted in Philadelphia, but the one from 1885 has a small square between the D and the O in dollar. I'm not sure what that means as for where it was minted. Also could someone please give me a value for these?

You have two Morgan Dollars. They were designed by George T. Morgan. Morgan Dollars were minted from 1878-1921. The year 1885 had a mintage of 17,787,000 and has the value of about $20.00.You say it has a small square between the O and D in dollar. would it be possible for you to scan or take a picture of your coin? if so I could tell you if it is an error or not for I am a coin collector. The year 1886 had a mintage of 19,963,000 and is also worth $20.00. Well I hope this information helps answer your question.

Well the 1886 is valued at $13 to $16.25 in circulated grades. the 1885-O is valued at the same. It is an O not a D for the Denver mint did not open until 1906. The may look bad due to most coins struck at the New Orleans mint had problems. they were so many that there is little added value to a so-called error. It was probably common to a lot of coins struck there with that date. there is no harm in checking with a coin dealer. It also could be damage done outside the mint. A little history here, the reason your coins do not have a high value is they had a great mintage, it seems in the 1880's they really struck a lot of silver dollars. Hope this helps. Values given are about what a dealer would pay.

It's impossible for us to answer you with a definitive amount as to what the value may be (though some nice ballpark figures have been given by taiping and mirrorcoin). Without very clear pictures we can't even come close. You can google it to find out a range or try posting pictures on this website:

Your best bet would be to take your coins to a local coin dealer. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coin. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

Good luck!

I can not give you an authorative opinion on the coin but it falls into the category of errors. As such it might have some value for someone who collects error coins. An 86-o in vf condition is worth about $16. If you check ebay, you will find the amounts that clipped coins are bringing in general. An unc 21 morgan with a clip went for $40.00. A recent Keel Boat nickle with a triple error including a clip went for $89.00. That will give you at least some idea of the value of your coin.
