By art I mean painting sketching etc. I am going to go to a local college to learn the basics, but I may not be accepted because there may not be enough space. Also you must know that I don't like to be taught by anyone below my standards; other wise known as hacks. I was struggling between music or art. Now that I chose art for the college and they may not accept more students, I want to know if it is better to learn by my self.

Some of the great masters had teachers, then again, there have been some who taught themselves or had minimal training. George Inness was one who had minimal training.

I think it is better to start by yourself and then after about six months go to art classes. that way you won't be 'influenced' into any style of someone else.

Just start, by sketching things, objects, like boxes, jugs vases etc.

And start painting by copying some good photos or pictures that you like.

But ALSO, just draw and paint what you see in your head.

Then you can go and learn the basics, of how to wash the canvass and mix paints etc. Start with Acrylic paint. Use your own imagination first. Good luck.

Always learn from the most talented person available. If its your life's calling, learn from the best in the world. This is what I am telling my children.
In the meantime, you need to lose the attitude. Hacks? It takes talent, experience, and knowledge. How many of those do you have right now?

Art, music alike, is a form of self expression. Consult a teacher for the road map or lantern, but walk the path yourself.

I think it would be better to learn from your teacher, if you really love art you'll never care about others opinion, as long as you could perform well why you should be ashamed to be thought as 'below standard'? You had decided to choose art, it means you really love it!!! If you don't have any chance to learn from your teacher, it will be better to learn by yourself!!!

I find that a lot of great artists are self taught. Their work is unusual, and their style is unlike anyone else's. It shows genius.
