The pro is you will have a backup drive always available. The con is a DVD-ROM will read cd-rom also, so the current cd-rom will most likely never be used again.

Of course if you're going to buy a new drive you most like will det a cd-r/dvd-r (burner) drive. Leaving the old cd-rom would be handy to copy cd's on the fly.

Either way, installing is very easy once you have the case open. There is a jumper at the back of the disc drives...make sre that you set the jumper on your old drive and new one to Cable Select (CS)...Plug the top connector of the IDE cable to your new drive, and the middle connector on the IDE cable to you old driver..there should be a spare power supply connector that you will plug into new drive.

Thats all there is to it.

I would add the new drive in the available slot. This will give you the option of copying CD's "on the fly" if that was one thing you had planned on doing.

There is a very good chance that the PC already has an available space on the cable as well to allow for the additional drive.

DVD-ROM drives have gotten very cheap and can be purchased for under $40 in most cases.

cost = con
pro's = very easy installation (4 screws) slides in and out . Shutdown, turn off power supply switch, open case, disconnect the ide ribbon from the optical drive, remove the power wire and any other wire (sometimes an audio is there), clasp the two green rail guides together pull... unscrew the screws. Noting the position the rails are in. Place guides onto the new optical drive, slide drive in place reconnecting all the wires you previously disconnected, Close case. Turn on computer, new hardware wizard should pop up... if you just wait it shoudl say now ready to use. If it came with software you may need to use the software or similar software to use the extra features such as lightscribe.

Well it does not make much of a difference if you keep the existing CD drive i would suggest you to simply add the DVD drive its quite simple you would hav a slot on the mother empty just beside the cd rom cable on the mother board plug it in and swith on the computer windows would automaticaly configure the drive for you and display it in "my computer"
Mostly it would be the E:\ drive
