I want a strong, yet beautiful name for my daughter. I'm not into contemporary american names.That means no Ashley, Madison, Karen, Sherri,Jane, Nicole, Makayla, Meridith, Jennifer etc....So I decided to go with the African baby girl names.

Choices...

Safiya (sah-fee-ah)
Zakiyah (za-key-ah)
Naya (ny-ah)
Octavia
Keenah (key-nah)
Brie
Jada
Sade
Kai

Suggestions are welcomed as long as the names are not american contemporary.

Wait, what!? You decided to go with an African baby name? So what's with the names on that list?

Safiya= Arabic
Zakiyya= Arabic
Naya= ??? I don't know if that's even a real name
Octavia= the feminine form of the ancient Roman Octavius
Keenah= a surname, I'm not sure whether or not it has any basis as a first name
Brie= a kind of cheese!!!
Jada= either an English elaboration of Jade or a male Hebrew name
Sade= Finnish
Kai= a masculine name in German, a feminine name in Swedish, and a unisex name in Hawaiian

Out of those choices, I think I would pick Octavia. It's beautiful, stately, and doesn't need a pronunciation guide.

I know quite a few Naya's, Jade's/Jada's, and Brie's. Also, with Sophia being so popular, you might want to reconsider Safiya, since you want something different. I really like Zakiyah and Kai!

I like Jada and Brie (but spelt Bree so it doesn't look like the kind of cheese) Not sure about the ones that need a pronunciation next to them and I think Kai is predominately a boys name now. I looked on babynamesworld.com and found these african names as well

Ada - noble/kind
Adanna - being the fathers daughter
Adelena - the oldest daughter
Amara - unfading/eternal
Azalee - she who sings
Hanna - Grace/favour
Kioni - she sees
Layla - dark beauty
Nyah - purpose
Omarosa - my beautiful child

Hope that helps. Amara has always been one of my favourite names!

My favorite is Safiya, Jade and Zakiyah, although I would spell it different, maybe Zachea or Zaqia. Hope this helps. I also would look at behindthename.com . It has some really nice (and different) names.

I commend you for those choices. I like all of them, especially because they are unique and not the cookie cutter names you here everyday. My faves are Safiya, Keenah, and Sade. Cute!!!!! Best of luck to you! :)
