The politicians lump illegals together with hispanics. All illegals are not hispanics and all hispanics are not illegal. But they feel that because the majority of illegals are hispanic that all hispanics stick by them. That is not the case. Hispanics that are legal most likely (if they have a brain) are against illegals. They soon find that the illegals are the reason that their family members can't come here and are on huge waiting lists. The also soon find that illegals are cutting in line to people waiting for visas, etc. Policiticians, I guess they feel like hispanics are not smart and can't see right from wrong.

That's a good question. I believe it is because - deep down - they realize America's complicity in allowing the illegals to enter this country in the first place.
Admit it now - this wasn't an issue until the illegals started costing us instead of benefiting us.
I doubt the Latino vote is the over riding issue to them - surely they realize the vast majority of voters are legal, non-Latino citizens, and they aren't going to offend such a huge voting block as that just to garner a much smaller voting block.
Consider, if the United States had simply enforced the laws in the past, this wouldn't have grown out of control - and it wouldn't even be an issue now. But we didn't - we opted for the cheap labor and the fatter bottom line.
Deporting 10 plus million illegals now is simply impossible - we don't even know how many are in this country let alone who they are or where they are. And to complicate matters, many have married and settled in quite nicely - with offspring which are American citizens no less.
However, I do agree with your second to last comment - "Where the hell is the leadership on this issue?"
Obviously, something has to change before we become a third world, poverty hell hole like the ones the illegals are fleeing now to get here.
Everyone wants a piece of the pie, but, unfortunately, the pie is only so large.

Only a tiny minority of Americans want the illegals "trhown out." The great majority want the politicians to reform the system.

That's one reason the GOP is going to lose big-time in 2008. Everyone knows they had 12 years incontrol of Congress to fix the immigration problem--and did nothing. everyone knows they spent 5 of those years leaving our border open--and it's only byt the grace of God terrorists didn't walk right in due to their lack of patriotism. Everyone knows that, when Bush introduced a conservative immigration refrrm bill, the right-wing scuttled it.

In 2009 we'll get a liberal immigration reform bill--and the right wing won't like that at all. Well, tehy had over a decade to deal with the problem--and chose to do nothing. Now--no one cares what they think anymore.

The candidates despise their own citizens yet people still support them.
