I think the smoking bans in bars and restaurants are pure bullsh"t! Who agrees or disagrees and why.?
I think the only requirement should be owners of bars and restaraunts should have to post a sign on the entrance saying the are "a smoke friendly establishment" or if not a No Smoking sign. In advertisments they should also specify if they allow somking or not. This will give everyone the freedom of choice.

It`s not fair that the government is making the ban. It should be strictly the owners decision on all policies. He or she is the owner and it`s no different than allowing smoking in your house or not.

NOBODY has the RIGHT to a smoke free bar or restaraunt. If you don`t like smoke you can choose another place to go.

I don't smoke. Having said that, I am in agreement with you. An establishment owner should have the option of allowing smoking or not. It should be clearly posted in front of the establishment so that I can avoid going in there. I do not like smoking but I like the big brother attitude of government even less.

Edit:

To all the people who claim their health is endangered by allowing smoking in an establishment. I agree that the smoking/non-smoking sections don't work. However, if an establishment allows smoking and I don't go in there, how will it affect my health? Simple fact is that it won't. Why can't owners have the option of allowing or not allowing smoking? There are plenty of waiters/waitresses who smoke, so getting employees will not be a problem and non-smokers need not apply. Me, I simply don't go into establishments that allow smoking. Seems like a fair and simple solution to me.

Bars even today have signs-up we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone! What's the problem? Now with that out of the way!
While I agree with you for the most part, and I am a smoker. At first when they started the crap about smoking
and I still think they are taking it way to the extreme. I have realized in large or heck any restaurant there are small children who are there and for them, I don't mind waiting or just excusing myself and go smoke. But in a Bar, not a R&B combination.(children in same area) in a BAR, these rules would be for CRAP!! Most people in a bar they smoke. If you don't want to be in the smoke leave at least show me the same curtousity that I gave your children. I really think the smokers for the most part have taken it well. A Guy bought this bar, so he decided to sell food there. He invested all this money into changing things over and that's when the smoking ban in
restaurants came about. He finally had to close his doors
because of this new law.(at the time) Now that is NOT right!! PERIOD no excuse, not enough non-smoker to keep his doors open............SAD!! Oh, and by the way its been a long time since I've been in a bar. I'm tellin' a lie went to hear a band "Sheri and the Psychodelics" a few months ago. they played Late 60's& early70's they were great. Put a .com on that they have a site. YES you could smoke!

I do not smoke, but I agree with you on the bars. However I disagree on the restaurants. I did not like eating at restaurants in the past where people were smoking. A non-smoker sometimes cannot tolerate people smoking while they are eating. When you take a bite and taste smoke in your mouth from the air, it is kind of disgusting. But in a bar, you should expect that people smoke, that is just the way it is. Plus most of the time, you are not eating.

COMPLETELY AGREE!

The bar owner decides what the decor is, the artwork, the ambiance... EVERYTHING. Thus, the bar owner should decide if his bar should be smoke free or not. If patrons do not want to go there, they do not have to. They can go to the bar down the street that IS smoke free.

I'm a non-smoker, and even I agree that nothing helps a buzz like an occassional cigarette.

Restaurants are a different story. The smoking/non smoking should be completely different rooms. (The above rule still applies) BUT if a restaurant is GOING to be smoker friendly, it would make sense to have smokers in a different room(or non-smokers) with good ventillation. This way the smoke wouldn't mix w/the food of the non-smokers, etc. (blech!)

What ever happened to the personal freedom of choice? Why does the gov't have to be involved in EVERYTHING?

From what I undewrstand the arguement is not that smoke is hazardous to the patrons. The arguement is that it forces the EMPLOYEES to work in a smoke filled environment.

This of course completely ignores the fact that anyone working at a bar could just as easily get a job at McDonalds and so they are at the bar by choice. They knew it was a smoking establishment when they applied for the job. It's like applying for a lawn care job and complaining that you have to work outside. There are other jobs, and noone is forcing people to work in a smoking establishment.

I can't stand cigarettes but that doesn't give me the right to tell you that you can't smoke.

i agree 100%. i believe that the owners should make the decision on what they want in their establishment. a sign would be a simple, cheap, and easy way to tell people of your policies and if they don't like it it is their choice to go or not. there is a resturant in pontiac in the club district (don't remember the name of it) that's open 24 hours that i went to once that normally had both smoking and non but on the weekends from 12am-4am the entire restaurant was smoking. i like the idea of smoking only establishments. almost anytime i go out to eat there is a line for smoking and non is only 1/2 full. the us if full of smokers and the economy will suffer more if our opportunities to go out, smoke, and spend money are taken away. i won't go out to eat at a place if i can't have a smoke with my meal and drinking makes any smoker want to smoke more (some non-smokers occassionally) so it doesn't make any sense to take those opportunities away. if the government here has their way you won't be allowed to smoke period, in your home or out. there were rumors here in michigan awhile back that they were discussing a possible law to make it illegal to smoke in your car with a child under 12 in it. this is getting out of hand and bordering ridiculous. smokers need to band together and fight this and all laws to ban smoking.

I do not go in bars so it matters not. However, when I dine out I like to enjoy the taste of the food and not smell nicotine on it. I am an ex smoker stopped 30 years ago and I hate the smell of it. My wife suffers from the effects of secondhand smoke from her mom. when you get older it is no fun to have to live hooked up to a tank. I lost a brother that way and a neighbor just last week. Both were on oxygen for 10 years. Not a very good lifestyle.

Your just the kind of illiterate "No body" who hasn't the understanding as to the harm, discomfort, or whatever such practcies (smoking only 1 issue) that people are forced to endure when others "light-up"

Yes, U have an opinion, to which u r entiltled, and I for one endorse it!

However, in this instance I would suggest its more a matter of consideration and as such, the comfort and well being of your fellows when grouped together in any such public establishments.

Not forgetting that many people have medical problems or other disorders - or are just put at discomfort!

People mix to be sociable, have pleasure, and enjoy such occassions. Its success is the behaviour of its guests in the form of good manners and due considerations given.

Maybe ur short on both!

Hey "J", how often are you going to post the same exact question on Yahoo? Try to understand that we're not living in the 19th century anymore, and a property owner running a business is NOT in the same legal situation as a person simply living in his own house. Businesses for several decades have been subject to fair labor laws, OSHA safety regulations, additional building codes and taxes, as well as public health ordinances enforced to protect his customers. And never mind the customers, EMPLOYEES have a right to a safe and healthy workplace environment so what about them? Nobody should be forced to choose between his health and his job. There is nothing new or particularly intrusive about smoking restrictions. When are you going to finally understand that?

As a smoker, I think the smoking ban in bars are complete stupidity, hence the reason why they are mostly going bust, however smoking in restaurants should be banned completely, there is nothing more disgusting than someone smoking when someone is eating.
