I know that true meaning must come from living for a true purpose. Otherwise, "meaning" just refers to those things that make us feel good about ourselves.

Purpose, by definition, requires a Creator/God.

“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (noted 20th century philosopher, mathematician and Nobel Laureate)

So without God, don't bother to seek meaning for there is none. But if we admit that God might exist, then it is reasonable that we set aside our search for meaning for the moment and seek God. Finding God is the only way we will find meaning for it is reasonable that God put our great need for meaning into our very nature in order to point us to seek Him.
