If your willing to spend more than $2,000 buy a MAC worth it and you don't have to worry about viruses, because you'll never have one! An inexpensive laptop with all the power but not 2 costly and has a great 24/7 tech support - HP. I have a Dell but their 24/7 is not so great anymore. And check out the facts before buying one - YAHOO search engine! I hope you find this useful!

for the average consumer, the Apple Macbook for $1099
for pro customers, get the Apple Macbook Pro for $1999
you can get even lower prices at other authorized resellers like MacMall.com
i have the macbook, it works great the screen is bright and clear, the software works flawlessly, no viruses, great keyboard, and the best part, it runs Mac OS X.
iLife can manage all your digital needs, iWork creates breathtaking presentations, with Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. with Spotlight, everything on your computer is accessible.
Safari opens up new doors to the internet and makes your experience online delightful. with the built in webcam and iChat AV, you can have text, audio, or video chats across the world, so you are always in touch.
also, with Parallels, you can run windows and Mac OS at the same time, it's the only computer you'll ever need. you can keep your old software, and get the amazing user experience that comes standard with every Mac.
i recommend the Macbook, it's fast, small, powerfull, and perfect for anyone.

It depends what you want it for.
512gb Ram - Intel Video Card- Win Vista Basic- 40gb Hard Drive = Basic word processing and other office documents
1gb RAM- Intel Video Card- Win Vista Premium- 80gb Hard Drive = Web browsing and some digital photography
2gb RAM- Nvidia/ATII Card- Win Vista Premium- 120-200gb Hard Drive- Gaming/Video Editing/Photo Editing/High Preformance
In terms of brands Dell, Sony Viao, HP are the best. In that order. Of course this is my opinion.
