I have 3 children, ages 5, 7, and 9, and recently i've decided to start using spanking as a method of discipline. I live in the U.S., can i get in trouble with the law for spanking?

Spanking is perfectly legal in the U.S., as long as it doesn't leave any bruises, welts, or other marks. If it leaves redness, it usually isn't considered abuse, though. The laws probably vary from state to state, of course. There is a common misconception that spanking with implements such as paddles, spoons, switches, hairbrushes, etc. is illegal, as far as i know it's legal.

Spanking with an open hand is legal. Using a belt, spoon or paddle can be considered child abuse.

Before you spank, though you need to remain calm. Repeated uncontrolled blows is considered abuse. Also, constant spanking (for every little thing) is considered abuse; so use it sparingly.

Spanking might not be the best punishment, but if it is the only one that corrects their behavior, then use it.

Every state has it's own laws. The law here in Colorado (and most states have similar laws from what I understand) is that you can spank the child as long as you do not leave any bruises, welts, or anything like that. The law allows for "transitional redness of the child's buttocks area" but any actual marks is considered abuse.

I sure hope not, or I'm off to jail soon. Spanking sometimes is THE only thing that works on my kids, ages 3, 4 1/2, and 6.

Good luck!

Yes, it is legal, but your kids are a little to old to just be starting. They should have been spanked starting at age 2 and you would have them under control by now.

Spanking with and open hand on the buttocks is not illegal as long as its over clothing.
Fist, kicking, pushing, belts, slapping or throwing shoes/objects could be considered physical abuse. Anytime there is a mark left it will be considered physical abuse as well.
We have taken many kids from their parents who have been spanked with spoons shoes or any other objects. Like I said any bruise or mark is considered physical abuse.

as long as it doesnt has a scar, i guess, regardless dont do it too
often, otherwise it will also become ineffective.
