As a generally accepted explanation, the suffix "stan" is an ancient Persian and/or Farsi word meaning country, nation, land, or place of, so, the country name of Afghanistan would then mean "homeland" of the Afghans, or place of the Afghans.
This could help a lot about the origin of their names:

The "Stan" is Uzbekistan, Pakistan, etc, is a suffix for the word "land". It's just like saying "Afghani land" "Kazakh land", just a way of saying where the native people are from. Hope it helps!
