first see if your computer is picking up any signals from other wireless conections from other computers. you can do this by going to the start menu and then click conect to... it will be on the right side of the start menu. some people have their networks secured so other people cannot use them. if the networks are secured you need to get a monthly plan from a DSL/Cable company. then after you get the modem setup, you can go to any superstore and get a wireless router. hook up the router to the modem. then go to your start menu-conect to to see if your computer picked up the signal from the wireless router.
Hope I could help :)

RE:
How can I get wireless connection without a phone line or cable line is there such a thing as a provider?
I don't know what other details I can add, but I don't have a phone and really don't have a need for one so don't wish to have to buy one just to have a wireless connection.

Check with the cell phone providers in your area they may be able to help. I had T-Mobil for my Laptop. It was however very slow and the connection was iffy in the house. There are other companies that will offer the same service such as Verizon. I don't know if Sprint does but I guess they all have this now at this stage in the game. Verizon is expensive but a good provider.

"If" you have a cable provider, or other high-speed internet service providers, you are better going with them, or be faced with the very few alternatives that will include slower connections and higher fees then just having a regular high speed connection.
Short of piggy-backing off a neighbors WIFI connection (some communities do this willingly, share, and other steal), it makes no sense to pay for expensive broadband wireless (no cable of anything) with slow speeds.
Look around for a good high speed internet provider that services your area. You might be able to shop around if you live in a large city. Or, like me, stuck with the "only" provider around paying $50.00 a month to get high-speed yuck.
In short, keep your mobile phone, get high-speed internet (comes from the pole to your house) and then get a wireless router and then a wireless lan card for your notebook.
Keep it simple.

Look for the website http://www.hughesnet.com and see if this is something you could use...it's wireless, has a satellite dish to receive internet [like a satellite TV dish] and is superduper fast [54mbps]. Nothing to do with cable or phone, you'd be your own little transceiver set-up. Only problem, unless you set up a security thing [the installer does this for you] your neighbors would be wireless too! I think it has a range of about 100 yards around the satellite dish... but check it out for giggles.

Some wireless phone providers will provide a wireless internet connection, but its pricey. Look into getting DSL -- some phone companies like Qwest will give you the DSL service without requirng you to subscribe to phone or other services.

you have to have an Internet connection. also a wireless router. That's the only way to get on to the Internet unless you go to a wifi hot spot. You can also get satellite wireless but its expensive. I think you can get something like a sprint broadband card but again you pay a high monthly fee

There are some people that steal their neighbor's connection - please don't do that. It is immoral and illegal.
There are many places that are Wifi 'hotspots' - coffee shops, bookstores, restaurants, to name a few.
A Internet Provider is a company such as AT&T, Verizon, etc. that provide Internet access - naturally at a cost.

Wireless access points generally need a cable or DSL modem to plug into.
