In theory you could, but in reality you won't. If you own a CD, you're allowed copies for yourself. If you're downloading, there's no way for the RIAA to prove that you don't already own the CD/tape/record (without raiding and searching your house, which they aren't going to do). Uploading, on the other hand, you can get in trouble for. Under no circumstances are you allowed to make copies for others, so it's easy to tell that you're breaking the law. Just the fact that you're uploading it means you're making copies for others.
Look at all the people sued by the RIAA - they were accused of sharing/uploading music, not downloading.

It is illegal. If you are caught you will be in big trouble. It's like stealing the CD out of a store.

yeah you can...but...there is a legal way you can do it...you may not get all of the songs you want...but you can get a good majority of them...go to www.searchhacker.com...it uses google for its search engine...anyways type in any song you want....then hit enter...then click the file type...and then click on whatever link you want...however...everytime you go back you have to click on the file type again...now...I will explain what this is...these are the parent directories from college servers and such...they are free to the public for use... these are the files that the students/teachers put on the directory for others to use...
so on that note...happy hunting :D

you might get away with it for now, but artist and record companies randomly decide at times they are going to target users of file sharing sights with legal actions.
