Yes, depression will come and hit you in the face each time your disability diminishes your capacity to do something you could have done. I am dealing with it myself right now. I use almost the same scooter you do, and only use it outside the house. Steadily over the past 10 years I have used a scooter more and more to the point that I rarely don't use it. The one time I haven't is when there is one to use inside a building - like a grocery store - I have been able to manage to walk in and get one of those. Well the last few times I have gone to a grocery store, the walk from the car to the scooter has been almost too much for me. And a few days ago when I walked in - found no scooter available - and had to walk back to my car, I thought I would collapse. I've also been finding that since I use it more, the battery is charging less effectively. Too many times lately I do something, and the scooter battery dies before I am done, and my son has to push me in the scooter back, or I have to propell it with my legs. The exhaustion from doing that takes over a day to recover from. I don't have a lift. My son has to help me get my scooter out. So I feel a significant loss of independence if I can no longer go out anywhere alone, including places where there are scooters to borrow. So, I have been feeling a subtle sense of growing depression. So now my task is to problem-solve the issue and accept my more limited capacity. The first thing I did was to buy a higher capacity battery, so at least I could scoot father distances and not have to self- propel my scooter. The next is to make a decision about my car. I have a scooter lift someone gave me, but it costs a lot to install it in my car. I thought I would wait til I got a new car, but in this economy it doesn't look like that will happen. Your scooter is new. I am betting that once you get out there a few times and realize what you can do that you haven't been doing because of pain, the stigma of the scooter and the loss of the ability to walk far will become less of an issue and you will enjoy the freedom it brings. BTW , your bit on your legitimacy as a person with a disability accomplishes nothing - anyone can type those words. In fact a pretender would be far more likely to write them than anyone else. I personally think it lessens your credibility. If I hadn't known you over time, I would think you are exactly what you purport not to be.

I found a few sites with answers to the same question. Maybe she has her own definition? Maybe you can figure it out by reading these sites? Maybe she was referring to something in the conversation. If your still not sure... ask her. Some people like to educate others on these things because they use it all the time! Hope this helps! Good Luck! =)
