ok Simon basically the way you answered my question and the situations that you explained to me were just people who are acting stupid. of course i am going to look down both sides of a road before crossing. Also if i was given the opportunity to live when i am in an ocean i wouldve tooken it. if i die i know it is my fault because i was given an opportunity to live and i didnt take it.

The answer to this question depends entirely on its context.

If by reason you mean some kind of higher power moving in a mysterious way then no, I don't think everything happens for a reason.

That is just people trying to find meaning amongst the numerous coincidences which occur throughout their lives from which their brains draw patterns in an attempt to make sense of a chaotic world.

People also use this reasoning as an explanation for some of the more unfathomable tragedies which occur in their lives. It is easier to believe things happen for some higher reason which they couldn't possibly understand (what with been a mere mortal and all) rather than face the fact that bad things happen just because they can.

I think this is why so many people turn to religion when faced with great loss, it is easier to believe that there is a higher being with a grand plan to justify why a tragedy must occur than try and have to rationalise it for themselves, with is usually impossible to do, unless there is someone else directly to blame. (Not that I'm saying that's the only reason people choose religion, far from it, but I can see the comfort in it)

Although I do believe everything happens for a reason, but only as in cause and effect, actions and consequences.

Though of course things do happen for a reason where people and free will are involved, although that is simply down to the decisions we make in life. If people accept responsibility for their actions and their resulting consequences then the real reason behind most mysteries a not far away. That's pretty much what I think anyway.

Just remember, sh*t happens. crass but true!

:o)

I definitely believe in that thought...Things do happen for a reason...sometimes it takes a little while for people to realize what that reason was...hence they say it's just a pure 'coincidence'...but that's until they've discovered the reason behind it...but i do believe there is always an underlying explanation to why things happen...even science has an explanation to it..."cause and effect"!
there are lots of evidences to prove it...however, if you're pertaining more to life and human struggles and surprises, people tend to deny this thought...but i think handling obstacles/surprises in life would be so much easier if people just let this thought sink in to their hearts and minds and just move on with their lives...instead of being stuck thinking about the "WHYs".
i'll give u one example that happened to me...not long ago, i bumped into a guy while waiting for my train at the station...it was my high-school crush...i havent seen him since i graduated high-school...but 'for some reason' we met again on that saturday noon...note that i never take the train on a saturday except on that very day...we've been really good friends since then...some would say it was a mere coincidence...but a few months after that i hopped on a plane and migrated to another country...i left my country but i brought that newly found friendship with me =) all because of what people usually call 'coincidence'...

Definitely do NOT believe this silly idea.
I LIKE to believe that
1. The world is governed by laws.
2. What you give out, you get back.
And there is evidence of this.
But if anyone out there believes in just letting things happen, try crossing a road without looking both ways.
The more you practice, the better you get.
The better you get, the more success you have.
I'm reminded of the vicer who went fishing in a storm, refused rescue from another fisherman, a container ship and a rescue helicopter then died. In heaven he demanded to see God.
"I've lived my life purely and without sin, obeying all your commandments. Never asking anything. I ask for one thing, to be saved, and I drown"
God replies, " I sent two ships, and a bloody helicopter. What more do you want".

Equally I see stranded mountaineers believing their rescue is a unique set of circumstances, making them special.
Yeah, the unique set of circumstances is that volunteers exist who put their lives in danger to train in mountain rescue. Then leave their families to go out in a storm and save your sorry bum.

We are responsible for yourself, when we forgo that responsibility someone else has to take up the slack. If we are very lucky.
Just as many people die from 'circumstances' as survive.

(edit)
I gave extreme analogies of what this thinking could lead to.
If your looking for a particular validation of a particular event, then best look inward. Instinct usually gives us a good answer.
I was saying, I have little time for people who live their lives according to this idea. I do however have sympathy for someone who cannot understand the rationale behind certain events.

You are in control of your life and you are the one who takes you to the places you will go and do the things that you will do. Sure you can say that everything happens for a reason as they say but, that reason is actually the decision that you have made whether you are aware of it or not (it seems that more people are not). If you look closely at the things you do you will see how it was actually your choice to do what you do.

You are your best guide just be honest with yourself and you will find the best results.

"Time and chance happens to all men", and women.

Life is a roll of the dice. We can do whatever is in our power to control events, but if we're driving along and a ten ton slab of concrete lands on our vehicle what reason is there for that?

God just wanted to bump you off? Do a hit on you?

It's a roll of the dice. Not luck, not coincidence, just chance. There's no reason for it other than the universe is a chaotic, unstable, and volatile place.

Some day we will all return to our original state of disembodied energy.

Lot's, but I'll only give a few to keep it short, plus I gotta get off of here...
I was supposed to go away to college, decided not to, ended up working in a dept. store, where I met my (at the time) future husband, and father of my children.
My husband got hit by a car, not injured, thank God, and since it was the other person's fault, we got enough money to repair the car and get Christmas gifts (which we could not have afforded to do before).
Gotta go...Night.

I definitely do not believe that "everything happens for a reason." My ex- believed that, and subsequent events supported her position significantly less than 50% of the time.
