Sunrise. Sunset.
Fragrant gardent flowers....
The cool morning breeze....
And lazy frolicking on green, rolling hills...
I almost forgot how they once made me feel
I miss them, even
How about you?
Care to share?

Thank you, everyone, for coming to answer my question. I’m glad that many of you have found ways to set your priorities and balance your lives in a way that you are not missing anything that this beautiful universe has to offer. I have learnt much from all of you.
You see, of late, I have felt that my career has taken a substantial hold of my life. And I seem to have less time on my hands to do all the things I used to do, like enjoying all those simple, but amazing things that happen daily; the sun rising and setting for instance. Dawn is usually the time I am busiest, getting everyone prepared for the day. And the sunset is now merely a reflection in the rearview mirror of the car as I drive home from work each day…

Shahbarak, my “guruji”, thank you, I’ll remember that tip. You are wise, as always…
Psychic Cat, you are right. I better substantiate myself before I really disappear…
Truith, are we going to slow down from running, together now…? Thanks
E fn w, very funny. But I want to be a rat no more…!
Brewers, I know how you feel…
Cynic and Buck, how poetic, and yes, I want more. But I’m not allowed to “drink”. Thanks anyway…
Phill, you gave me something to think about there. Thanks
I’m sorry I couldn’t mention everyone, but I really appreciate this. And the stars too. Good luck, everyone!

Yes I don't want to be part of the rat race. I don't want to be a rat...
If we get too caught up in the "business of life" we forget how to live. We get caught on a treadmill, working and acquiring things. The key to happiness is to live with joy and passion, to be at one with nature. To appreciate the beauty of the world instead of being mired in the ugliness.
We need to slow down. To watch the sun rise & set. To appreciate the little things. To celebrate the seemingly mundane miracles that occur every day. The simple pleasures.
Many people become slaves to their schedules, to work and other commitments. They forget to take time to nurture their souls. Then they wonder why they are stressed and irritable and their health suffers. Many of us live lifes by default. We don't have what we want or may not even know what we want and we just end up settling for what we have. We get caught up in routines and forget what really matters.
We must follow our dreams. We must live with passion and purpose. We must fill our hearts with love and joy...
We are children of nature. We need to remember to recharge our spirits. To breathe in fresh air, to be close to the beauty of the world and never take it for granted...

In a busy life, usually doing three or four things at least at once, I never did race the rats. I usually just let them rush around getting cranky and exhausted. I was used to deadlines, and never missed one, but if I felt pressured I'd go for a walk or have a cup of coffee or a pipe, and come back refreshed. If that didn't do it I'd go to bed early and usually whatever wheel needed turning on the rat race would turn in my head and all I had to do was write it down or draw it up next morning. The mind works best when you just give it something to play with and let it do its own thing. But oh, those poor rats!

Far too many people believe they're not in control of their lives. So, they wind up missing them. Ask a dozen people why they don't slow down & enjoy. "I cant! I haven't time! I HAVE to do....." What quality of life is that? I feel sorry for them. I have to earn a living, I have many tasks. But I balance my priorities, & every single day I'm alert to opportunites to see, & smell, hear & touch the myriad of pleasures--right here. Right now. No frenzy for a short vacation & down to the nub when back at the job; no need for more money to buy "things" I really don't need. We may live in a society of avarice & stress, but we don't have to subscribe to it. Simple things like just now, the park is being watered & the sound of it is fresh, whispered as wings. The old bull frog is back & calls from the reeds at the lake. I listen to him & wonder...about him. The hummingbird came today for a snack from the red geraniums. Invisible whir of tiny wings. Dawn flushed the mountain top in delicate magenta. When I went on an errand earlier, the FM station played something I haven't heard for years--Respighi's Fountains of Rome, so appropriate as I passed the many fountains in this city, antic & white as snow. Isn't life to thrive? Why do you miss the things you mentioned? Have they vanished, or have you?

We all rush, rush , rush to get nowhere. I am a introvert who has learned to act as a extrovert out of self preservation. I need a lot of alone time to recharge. We are all so programed to succeed by the worlds standards that we can spend days just running, for for me that is always a running from & never to anything. We are all so busy with our gagets, jobs, & aquiring stuff that we lose sight of ourselves. Then we run harder because if we ever did get quiet & got to know ourselves we might not like what we see. I am getting older I guess, it seems to take a long time to learn not to chase our own tails & have the courage to just slow down & really be.Thanks, you always have thought provoking questions.

The time to take to actually look at life and reflect and consider is almost non-existant in retrospect. I have long forgotten the way simple things used to make me feel, as long as the wait was for them to come. Now it all just seems like one series of events setting off another and another until everything you once knew was forgotten.
The time to take
to fill up your schedule...
with hours of nothing.
An unplanned hour
of simple,
uninterruptible,
living...
and the courage to make it happen.
Realization,
that life
is not acting on orders from others,
just on your own impulses.

The rat race is just a name for consumerism. The pack rats like to accumulate shiny things so much that they are willing to sell their souls/minds for stuff. The rush is caused by consumer debt from buying stuff they didn't really need. They also like to deny this rodent habit by calling their wants "needs".

Passing clouds on an azure sky, playing hide and seek with each other as they disappear and reappear;
the flight of a butterfly;
the songs of birds;
the travel of an inch worm on the edge of a small branch;
the gurgle of a small stream;
a cold Budweiser;
More?

frolic? I last frolicked when I was 10.
Now if I frolic my wife calls me childish and my friends call me freak
I sleep and I wake by my clock, the toil and the work has made me meek
Is it too much to ask or is it too dear?
For an hour of frolic and a beer?

Everything you do without is a piece of your life returned to you. Is there any sensation more delicious than just being alive and paying attention only to that ?
