I would put Office on there because its WORD and EXCEL and POWER PT are the best of breed for writing, computing, and showing. I would put a good photo imaging program like PhotoShop so you can deal with photos. After that you might be impoverished but your computer will be great.

I've been running Tune-up Utilities 2007 which has been working fine for me.
Unfortunately, the best thing you can do is remove software that resides in memory during normal operation. Typically, when I get my hands on a new laptop, I spend about an hour or two getting all the latest Microsoft updates and removing anything the manufacturer installed.
The best best thing you could do is get rid of Windows Vista and replace it with Windows XP SP2.
I would recommend no one use Vista yet, but there has to be someone so they can fix all the bugs and have demand for drivers for all the hardware out there that is not supported.

Stay away from McAfree, Norton, and other famous brands unless you know how to work those programs. They will run many programs at once and slow down your computer. Go to a computer store and look for programs that say 'PC-Tune up'. Make sure you read everything on many different programs to see which is the best deal. Some will cost a lot and do little for you. Others will cost a little and give you lots of features but won't do a very good job. I use Defender Pro but there are better.

go to www.download.com and get a program called Rambooster 2.0. this will free up any ram that doesnt need to be used. also from that site try AusLogics DiskDefrag. this is faster and more efficient than the windows defragger. also a program called CCleaner will free up any unneeded files such as temporary internet files and will potentially speed up your computer. im not sure that these are compatible with vista but it is definitely worth a try

In general, each program you add uses some of your resources, hence, slows your computer down some. For optimal performance, your question should be, "What programs can I eliminate".
