There are a million reasons to secure your wifi. Here is a great basic article on why and how.

here is specific information on Home Networks

the issue of "borrowing" your bandwidth and pirating your internet is the least of your worries. Having them steal your passwords, get your banking information, and other private data are serious threats on an unsecured network! SO secure it today.

Do turn on WPA or WEP (less secure if at all) turn off the SSID broadcast - that will mean you have to enter it as well as your security key to connect but it sure helps keep people out.
Visit your router manufacturers website for other tips, nearly all of them have specific details about how to secure your wifi.!

Hope that helps.

Log into your wireless router by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 on a browser window. If it asks for a login and password, google your router model number and "login password". It's usually admin/admin or admin/password.
When you are in the router, look around for "Security" or "Wireless"
Change your setting to WPA or WPA2. WEP security is a joke, and has been demonstrated to be crackable in just a few seconds.
