The Flag Raisers
There are six Flag Raisers on the photo. Four in the front line and two in back.
The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block.
The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley).
Strank, Block and Sousley would die shortly afterwards. Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon became national heroes within weeks.

Michael Strank and Rene Gagnon . The other answer posted is wrong, they were not all white, Ira was a Pima Indian who died of alchol abuse, listen to the song by Johnny Cash. The mountain was MT Suribachi. Also noted japan just changed the name from Iwo Jima to Iwoto, the islands orginal name

The marines are trying to see if a "Harold Henry Schultz" was one of them. Deceased since 1995, because of some discrepancies between two pictures taken at that time. Odd. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/detroit-city/2016/05/03/detroit-marine-iwo-jima/83895712/

Three of these men died on Iwo Jima, Block and Strank on Feb 28th 1945; Sousley on March 24th.
Hayes died in January 1955
Gagnon --October 1979
Bradley in January 1994
a great loss for all of us.

They were U.S. marines.
They were not all white, one at least was a Native American.

THEY WERE 5 WHITE MEN, THEY RAISED THAT FLAG TWICE ON MOUNT. SIRCHBACHIE.
AND THAT 1 NATIVE AMERICAN WAS CUT OUT OF THE PICTURE. HE WASN'T EVEN ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE POLE AND THE FLAG BIG WOW!
