This is a frustrating problem. Any advice on how to correct it (without DSL etc) would be greatly appreciated!

Seriously. I'm downloading Yahoo! Widget Engine as I post this. I have another 1 hr 39 mins to go! HELP!

the 56K is in bits, and 8 bits is 1 byte, so the maxmum speed you get is 7KB, and that doesn't all go to download so 2.99KB is pretty normal.

You may have auto updates running in the background which are downloading stuff which will slow down your own downloads. When using a dial up connection, it is a good idea to reset the auto update features on all your programs, including Windows, to ask you to download stuff first. Or turn it off alltogether and check for updates yourself manually from time-to-time. Some big time auto-update culprits are Windows, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Antivirus programs.

U SHOULD BUY AN INTERNET WIRELESS CARD, THEY ARE CHEAP AND U CAN USE THEM TO STEAL OFF OF WIRELESS INTERNET PEOPLE IN UR AREA. AND YES ITS FASTER THEN 56K.
