The shape and size of the ear plugs is identical but still marked L & R. Is it marked for any specific reason or is there a small difference in the audacity between the two years

(This is a simplified explanation.) Stereo music is recorded in two tracks. One is from the left in the recording studio, and the other is from the right. To reproduce the original sound as it was produced, you need to be listening to the tracks on the same side as they were recorded. It usually doesn't make a lot of difference unless you are a purist in your musical enjoyment.

Songs are comprised of multiple "tracks". Drums layered over guitar, layered over bass, vocals, etc... Headphones split this for your listening pleasure. Pay attention and you'll hear certain songs play off of this by fading sound from one ear to the next.

It's for consistency. You don't hear the same out of both ears so you can adjust one side of the earplugs to be louder on your control panel for instance. If you made the right side louder, you might not want to hear it out of your left ear.
