Most better pet shops also have fish for outdoor ponds, including large goldfish and Koi. Look under pond supplies in the yellow pages or call aquarium stores and locate one that sells large pond fish.

Many nurseries (like for plants) or garden centers sell larger koi and goldfish suitable for pond life, such as comets and shubunkins. I know of at least two, each within 20 minutes of my home (unfortunately, neither is a chain so I can't say that you would have the same luck in your area, though you may).

Also, I know of at least one local breeder (in northern Utah) who grows/sells HUGE goldfish - like 12" long shubunkins, etc. The garden centers and other pond supply places tend to have lists of these people - just ask.

And, you can always check e-bay. With shipping, it might be a little more expensive than buying something at a local pet store, but there is usually a better selection of large, high-quality fish. You could also check Craig's List and your local newspaper's classified ads - every once in a while, fish turn up there as people try to get rid of things that have outgrown their tanks, etc.

In general, I have been happier with the quality of fish I have obtained over the internet and through classifieds than I have been with smaller fish from the chain stores such as Petco and Petsmart.

Hope this helps.

Many of the goldfish at your pet stores will get quite big. They aren't very big when you buy them as they are juveniles. It would not be cost efficient for the pet stores to have the adult fish in a tank. But buy a few pet store juveniles and wait a year and you will have some big goldfish. Most pet stores will have a description telling you how big they will get as an adult next to the tank.

Gold fish do not get really big but there is a big fish called koi that eat goldfish flakes.
