In A gathering of Old Men, what is the significance...?

Question

of the names of many of the supposedly iliterate blacks having real names of famous writers. Ex. Robert Louis Stevenson Banks, aka Chimley & George Eliot Jr., aka Snookum. Why did Gains do this and what is its significance to the story?
