Yes, of course. A half-truth is only part of the truth, and therefore it is also part of a lie. Since society tends to lean towards the worse of two evils, rather than the better, when it comes to condemnation, then a half truth is just a lie.

I agree with your statement that a half-truth indeed result to a whole lie. The fact that only half of the truth is revealed makes the story half-baked truth and this won't justify to make the story full baked of truth. There is still a whole lie because you cannot use as a defense a half lie. This is totally absurd and will never changed the whole picture. The summation of all is a whole lie.

I've always said that a half truth is a half lie. But I do have to agree with you, Rena. The only reason I call it a half lie is so those who do it can better understand the meaning. To many people the truth is whatever comes out of their mouths.

I have to say that I agree with the second & third answers, as they take into consideration that what is defined as a lie needs some flexibility. Have you ever told a "half" truth to avoid hurting someone? I think you're a sensitive person, & you'd make that choice, wouldn't you? To me, a "whole lie" involves deliberate deceit, harmful intention, or self protection from something illegally, or imorally said or done.

Yes, but half-truths are sometimes necessary, to avoid totally destroying someone.
A world were only truth was told and feelings were never spared, would not be a very nice place to live.

Absolutely, if it is not the truth, that means it's a lie. Even if the person is telling you half truth, the other half is still a lie.

Interesting. A half truth is not really a lie. It may be that some facts were either deliberatley or accidentally left out (maybe to save someones feelings) whereas a lie is a straight out false statement. Very analytical and matter of fact answer. However, if a half truth is told deliberatley to hurt or upset someone, then yes, it is morally just as bad as a lie told.

Sure; truth laced with lies is still lies.

For a really good scam to work easier and more effectively it has to have a kernel of truth within it for it will be lapped up by the gullible who will only see and zero in on a 'truth'.
