That is a very good question. The answer is the voting public, on the whole, are gullible and easily led, and downright stupid.

After the first election New Labour changed constituency boundaries. The result was a swamping of tory & lib dem voters thereby ensuring victory at the second election.
The "apathy" of the British electorate ensured victory for New Labour at both the last & previous election. Less than 50% of those eleigible to vote actually did so and of those less than 50% voted labour. In other words less than 25% of the eligible voters actually voted labour. Which made a total mockery of Tony Blair's claim that he had a clear mandate from the British public.
I never voted for New labour and never will despite having been a labour supporter prior to their arrival. I find them to be a party of spin, sleaze, double standards, totally lacking in moral integrity and a dictatorial party.

He wasn't a traitor - more a misled leader with weird religious convictions, more a victim of religion, seduced by the American right. Many of us didn't vote for him or Labour, and due to the "first past the post" voting system in England the party with the most votes no matter if it was in the 30%'s wins.
I voted Labour because the Tories are worse, but none of us gets to vote in the leader of the party, our MP's and other party members do that. By the way, what ever Tony Blair did with George Bush in the middle East, he did well to settle Northern Ireland.

I did not vote. But it is not correct to say that "Blair a traitor to the Labour party". Some people say that but it is not a statement of fact. The Labour Party does not think so which is more important.
The correct facts are that people voted for the Labour party and unfortunately in the British Political system, the leader chosen by the party is the PM. So there is no choice of PM really
Other facts are that he did manipulate the Party to get the Iraq war going and that is why he was so hated.

In English we say vote "for" and "Why did". Where do you get your information from i.e. "Tony Blair was a traitor to the Labour Party"? For my money he was the best Prime Minister we've had since WW2. I was born in '52 so I can't comment on Eden and Churchill from experience. Thatcher, Major, Heath, Callaghan, Douglas-Hume, MacMillan , Wilson? any ideas on that lot?

Tony Blair is not a traitor to the labour party. In fact he has been quite a good P.M. ( for a socialist). His downfall was his rich right-wing bible-bashing mate GW Bush, who cajoled him to go to war in Iraq, We do not have proportional representation in this country, which means we could ( and do) sometimes end up having a party in power, which more people voted against than voted for. It is a very odd state of affairs. I didn`t vote for Tony or his party.

Most Labour supporters like myself, vote for a local MP. We do not concern ourselves overmuch about party leadership issues.
My MP is working class and Labour. He is a London Cabbie [taxi driver]. I am a cleaner.
I would not be seen dead eating in a restaurant in Islington.
My partner and me eat in restaurants either in the West End or Mayfair. Anyone who eats in Islington is a chav.

sure the 'new' in Labour as effectively the tip of it, yet some are slow to understand, they nonetheless believed they could 'rescue' the occasion and that it advert its united statesand down extremely forgetting that it became under one hundred years previous whilst 'new' Labour wrecked it and has no longer have been given the permanence of the Liberals or Tories who've been around for hundreds of years and only shop changing their spots now and back.
