I have to start supplementing formula to my 4 month old son soon. Any suggestions on what would be a good formula to buy. Also, what is the best way to introduce formula to a child who has been strictly breastfed or do babies typically do not have a problem switching back and forth.

I started to supplement with formula when my son was four months, and man was he pissed!!! not from the formula (which by the way similac is by far the best i have to agree with her up there ^^) but because he didnt want anything OTHER than breast... so be prepared to have him get pissed off... and if you can, have your signifcant other, or another person who is helping out give the bottle to him, with you out of the room, it will be hard to hear him cry when he is mad... when helped my husband and I is I would go near his face and rub his cheeks in circles gently to let him feel skin to skin contact.. and so he could smell me and know I was there, and I would quietly shush him, although he would scream... and my husband would rub the bottle nipple on the roof of his mouth or on his gums kinda to get his rooting replex going. It may take a few days, so you might want to start a few days before you have to leave or go back to work.. but if at all possible, I suggest breastfeeding as long as you can and punmp as much as you can!!! I still supplement breastfeed, and my son is 9 1/2 months old. It is a really strong bond, and of course I'll be stopping by his one year (which pediatrics recommend up to atleast a year!!) But make sure you do the weaning slowly, so he won't be too crazy mad!! And so your breasts won't get engorged too much and infected.

I didn't strictly breastfeed my babies so I can't answer the part about how to introduce formula but I have to say I like Enfamil Lipil the best. When I started to feed my son more formula than breast milk I was afraid that he would get constipated because my daughter did. He did great on the Enfamil but we went on the WIC program and they only give you Nestle Good Start- he did awful on that! On the Enfamil his BM's are like when he was only breastfed, loose and yellow with curdled milk. On the Good Start they were green and thick and STINKY! I asked my Doctor and she said that the Good Start is a little less expensive than the Enfamil and is like a generic/store brand. She said that they recommend Enfamil or Similac because they have been around for a long time and are proven. Good luck!

most formulas are the same, but your baby may be picky. My breast fed baby used Good Starts by nestle, its a little cheaper too. Start by intorducing a bottle, he may not like the chnage of nipple at first so you may have to try a few brands. once he will drink water or juice form the bottle try a little expressed breast milk Once again he may reject it, so start by having someone other than you give it to him When he will take the bottle of breastmilk without protest, start mixing it with formula, 6oz of milk to 2 oz formula. Slowly increase the amount of formula over the course of a few days, until he will take 100% formula. Be sure to nurse him every AM and PM so you can keep your milk up, and you may need to pump for a little while to keep it going strong. good luck!!!

get a formula with iron in it. some children have a really hard time and then on the other hand some do great with it. start by mixing 1/2 and 1/2 then moving to str8 formula. Also get a nipple that is natural shaped you may have to try different ones.

You can mix it half and half (breast milk and formula) I really liked Similac the best.
