What are some colleges/universities with good dance programs? I live in Michigan so any school near there would be best. I've been dancing for 11 years so I don't think auditioning is a problem. Another thing, most colleges don't have great tap programs. Are there any schools out there for advanced tappers?

The University of Michigan's dance program is fabulous for modern dance, but if you're looking for more - plus trying to aim for a professional performing career in those other styles - then you're going to have to look out of state. I've heard some good things about Western Michigan University, in that they also have some decent jazz classes, but they're not known for sending graduates onto the Big Time in dance.

Oklahoma City University is the top program if you're especially interested in tap, as they offer ten levels of tap instruction. The University of Michigan, if I recall, only offers about a class to two through their Musical Theatre department. A few of the triple-emphasis programs (ballet, modern and jazz) offer upper levels of tap - namely Marymount Manhattan College, University of the Arts, and University of Arizona. Southern Methodist University has a triple-emphasis program, but as far as I know, they don't offer any tap. Point Park University has a very strong triple-emphasis program, but I believe they only offer one level of tap. Keep in mind, tap is not a widely used style, so this is why colleges don't pay much attention to it. If you're an advanced tapper now, you're pretty much all set.

As the mother of a native Michigan dancer who had to leave home at 17 in order to seek advanced dance training out of state, I strongly recommend you start going out to see as many college dance programs as you can, starting this fall. Certainly check out UofM, WMU, Wayne State U., Marygrove and Hope College just to get an idea of what this state has to offer. But you also need to start researching programs that more specifically match what YOU want to do with dance, rather than simply asking strangers "what are some good dance programs."

I'm able to get private messages and I'd be happy to offer more guidance if you or your parents would like to get in touch with me.

The first place you should look at is University of Michigan, which is a superb school all around, and large enough that I would think ot would have an excellent dance program.

The only one that I know of is Alma. I have a dancer friend who passed up a full ride to Michigan for Alma and their dancing program.
