C'mon folks. Who said Mars was to be compared to a full moon? How about comparing Mars to a new moon? Or, since there is an eclipse this month, to an eclipsed moon?
I have not found an Internet source which lists the magnitude of either a new moon or an eclipsed moon. Would either be easier to see than Mars if they were the apparent size of Mars?
I do know there were rumors the last time that Mars was in opposition that it would be as big as the moon. Now THAT is a silly rumor!!

The truth is no.
Mars never gets any closer than 34 million miles from Earth (and this month its still a lot further than that).
So it is never more than a bright pinpoint of light in the sky.
What you heard is a incorrect and completely impossible "story" that was originally started in 2003, when Mars was closer to Earth (34 million miles) that it had been in many years.
All it proves is that a little "knowledge" is a dangerous thing. And a little incorrect knowledge somehow just finds people that perpetuate the inaccuracy.

ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY FALSE. that is an internet rumor that has been circulating since 2003. It makes use of clever lack of punctuation at the end of a paragraph to technically say it will be 75 times smaller than the moon.
If mars was the size of the full moon in the sky, I would start to worry.

It's a good idea to type something into the "search for questions" box (see top of this page) to see if anyone else has already answered this question.
If you type "moon mars august", you'll see that 127 other people were fooled by the Moon/Mars hoax before you.

thats what I wanted to know...... I got this info and asked it myself on here
I hope this is right...
The whole world is waiting for August 27th.
Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting in August.
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
This will cultivate on August 27th when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth.
Be sure to watch the sky on August 27 at 12:30 a.m.
It will look like the earth has 2 moons.
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it
again.

NOT TRUE..! Some bimbos have been circulating this nonsense for awhile. Mars has *never* been as bright as the full moon, nor will it ever be.
