Frank Herbert, author of the science-fiction novel "Dune". In the early to mid-1960s, he dealt with environmental concerns, before there was an Earth Day and awareness became more widespread. Perhaps the only person more ahead of her time in this respect was Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring".
Frank Herbert was also ahead of his time in his appreciation for Arab culture, which can be seen in "Dune". His desert Fremen are obviously patterned on the Bedouin nomads.
