A man cannot be close friends with a woman who he is sexually attracted to. If the female friend is below his standards or to young/old, then friendship is possible.
The dilema is the female at the other end of the relationship seen above is often attracted to the man, diminishing the friendship as a 1 with a crush + 1 without.
I have had friend-girls for years, who visited me, called, etc etc, only to admit years later they were in love with me.
Females:
When a female is friends with a male, but not attracted to him, he is chosen generally as an emotional tampon / intellectual whore. This male absorbs her verbal / emotional sob stories (about the biker thugs she dates) while he secretly hopes she will have sex with him.
Little does he know that after crying on his shoulder for 3 hours, and going out to dinner, she's back in bed with the badboy boyfriend that very night.

when you say 'close friends' how close are we talking about? If your friend is 'special' then that's probably the only relationship you'll have, and yes it's possible as long as it's mutually agreed upon. Those types of relationships don't last, because eventually someone will want more than just physical intimacy.
But if you mean close as in psychologically, yes, it is possible,. Generally people see that person as a sibling and not a romantic interest.
